One mark per launch from OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, xAI, Meta, China, Europe and the rest, with open source shown apart. Higher means a bigger change in practical work for people building an AI business brain, as scored by three AIs: Claude, ChatGPT and Jev. The last 30 days in detail; earlier years only the big moves. The Story tab explains where it is all heading.

Arete AIOS
Where we are heading
For a thousand years the wealthy managed resources: land, capital and the people who worked for them. Soon every business owner will manage an AI organization. Agents do most of the work, the AI takes over the routine, and the owner keeps the thinking and the decisions.
It takes means, but far less than a property portfolio. What it takes most is structure, and control. That is what Arete AIOS builds: the business brain lives on the company's own computer and server, a local AI handles private data, external models do the deep work, and control stays with the owner.
In a business: AI proposes improvements to your offer and your processes; you decide. Not business-ready yet.
5
Organizations
Our goal · First pieces since 2026
AI does the work of an organization.
In a business: This is where Arete AIOS is heading: you run an AI organization. Agents run the repeatable operations; you set direction, approve and keep the decisions.
You and the AI work on the same document or code together.
Projects and artifacts, 2024
3
Consultant
The AI does the task and asks you when it is unsure.
Work and coding agents, 2025
4
Approver
The AI prepares and acts; you approve before anything leaves the company.
Where an AIOS aims for routine work, 2026
5
Observer
The AI runs on its own; you watch results and alerts.
Only for low-risk routines with a track record
The target for a business brain is not full autonomy. It is approver for everything that touches customers, money or people, and observer only for low-risk routines that have earned it.
The fork: who will hold your business brain?
After checking the evidence we see one real fork and one question that decides how far an owner can go. The fork is who holds the business brain: the memory, the skills, the agent definitions and the keys. The question is where the thinking runs: on rented cloud models or on the owner's own computers. That gives three tracks, and all of them will exist side by side.
Today the default path leads to the platforms. The standards that connect tools are opening up, but memory and hosted agents are where the platforms build their walls. A business stays in control only by choice: its brain kept as its own files, and agents it can move.
Track 1 · the platform holds the brain
Rented brain
Your memory, skills, agents and keys live inside ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini or Microsoft. Easiest to start, hardest to leave. This is where most businesses will go by default.
Who: OpenAI, Anthropic, Google and Microsoft; Meta and xAI want in. Specialist platforms such as Lovable, Manus or Genspark do the same for one job.
Watch for: memory you cannot export as files, agents that exist only in a vendor console, hourly fees for hosted agents.
Track 2 · the owner holds the brain
Arete AIOS today
Own brain, rented thinking
Rules, memory and skills are the business's own files on its own computer or server, and its agents run there. The best cloud models are rented and can be swapped. You own the data and the routing; you rent the compute.
Who: Open standards (MCP, Agent Skills, AGENTS.md), open-source agents such as Hermes Agent and OpenClaw, and every vendor that supports them.
Watch for: how many tools adopt the open standards, real memory export, EU switching rights from 12 January 2027.
Track 3 · the owner holds brain and thinking
Arete AIOS Core, the goal
Own brain, own thinking
A computer in the office runs open models for everyday and private work. Cloud models get only the hard tasks, with personal data removed first. Medical, legal and client data stay in the building.
Who: Open-weight labs (Meta, Qwen, DeepSeek, Mistral, Google Gemma, OpenAI gpt-oss), local runtimes and desk computers with 128 GB of memory.
Watch for: how many months open models trail the frontier, what a small-office computer can run, and how much personal data local redaction still lets through.
Hybrids such as Lovable, Manus or Genspark are not a track of their own: they are specialist platforms that hold your work for one job. Useful, but for that job they sit on track 1.
Open-source agents such as Hermes Agent and OpenClaw are not a separate track either: they are the engines that make tracks 2 and 3 possible.
Agents doing more on their own is not a fork. Every track moves from assistant to delegated work (maps 1 and 2). The fork is who holds the brain while that happens.
Radar: which way the launches push
Every rated launch, tagged by our three AI raters: does it help a business keep and move its own AI context (owner control) or keep it inside one platform (platform hold)? Does it move work toward the owner's computers (local) or a vendor's cloud? Neutral launches are left out; periods with few launches swing more.

What we watch every month
Open models behind the frontier: about four months on average since January 2026 Epoch AI ↗
Local hardware: a desk computer with 128 GB of memory runs open models of up to about 200 billion parameters; Nvidia DGX Spark costs $4,699, Mac Studio M5 Max starts at $2,499 Nvidia ↗
Cost: at today’s prices a local machine is mainly a privacy choice, not a saving, unless it is kept busy. Our estimate: a $4,699 machine over three years is about $130 a month, the price of about 6.5 million Claude Opus 5.5 output tokens Claude pricing ↗
Private data before the cloud: local redaction helps but is not perfect: in one study a local plus cloud pipeline kept 85.5% of answer quality and still leaked 7.5% PAPILLON, NAACL 2025 ↗
Open standards: Agent Skills is supported by ChatGPT and Codex, Gemini CLI, GitHub Copilot, Cursor, Mistral Vibe, Hermes Agent and OpenClaw; MCP and AGENTS.md moved to the Linux Foundation's Agentic AI Foundation in December 2025 agentskills.io ↗
Memory you can take with you: Claude and Gemini offer one-time memory export or import; there is no memory interchange standard yet Claude memory ↗
EU switching rights: the EU Data Act requires export in machine-readable formats since 12 September 2025, and switching charges end on 12 January 2027 European Commission ↗
Concentration: Anthropic, OpenAI and Google took 88% of enterprise LLM API spend in 2025; the open-source share fell from 19% to 11% Menlo Ventures ↗
Hype check: Gartner expects over 40% of agentic AI projects to be cancelled by the end of 2027 Gartner ↗
What to do with this
Keep your rules, memory and skills as your own files that any AI can read. That keeps you on the owner tracks.
Pick one repeatable job and let an agent do it, with your approval before anything leaves the company. That is the approver role.
Send private and personal data through a local model first, and give the cloud only what it needs.
